ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY (ART)
What is ART?
As its title implies, ART refers to technologies that serve to assist in human reproduction. For such technologies to be included in the definition set forth by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they must refer to "treatments in which both eggs and sperm are handled," not those "in which only sperm are handled (i.e., intrauterine - or artificial - insemination) or procedures in which a woman takes medicine only to stimulate egg production without the intention of having eggs retrieved."
Forms of ART:
There are several forms of assisted reproductive technologies that fall under CDC guidelines. These technologies include in-vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intra-fallopian transfer (GIFT), zygote intra-fallopian transfer (ZIFT) and tubal embryo transfer (TET).
