In the first part of this series, we gave you some tools to prepare your relationship for the IVF process. Since 85-90% of infertility cases are treated with drugs or surgery, there is a whole other step to this support. You can consider these tools for keeping your relationship strong throughout your whole IVF treatment.
During treatment...When you and your partner begin the IVF process, it's extra important to find ways to support each other, as this can be an emotional time. Small efforts like the following can help you strengthen your bond with your partner during this time.
Plan date nights
Even if you are already in the habit of going on dates, this is extra important during treatments. It's easy to stay at home and be comfy when you are tired from IVF, but getting out together will spark some extra romance. Your relationship will feel more important when you nurture it in this way.
Practice active listening
When your partner comes to you with a difficult emotion or problem, really listen to them and make them feel validated. Don't try to go into problem solving mode or talk about a similar experience you had that day -- just listen. They are more likely to reciprocate this feeling, supporting you when you need it. This type of uninterrupted listening can go so far.
Know when to seek outside support
While your partner might be your biggest support system, you might need to seek outside help as well. By attending a counseling group, peer support group, seeing a therapist, and even talking to your friends, you can take some of this pressure off of your partner and get a wider variety of tools.
Plan a vacation
By planning a getaway for you both, you can have something to look forward too that isn't related to your fertility journey. Despite the promising success rate of IVF, you will have a bright spot in your near future.
By making this effort to support your relationship during IVF, you can help your partner feel supported and meet your emotional needs as well. And when your visits to the fertility center are finally over, you can leave feeling stronger than ever.
