As you navigate through this process, Dr. Abuzeid and the rest of the IVF Michigan team are here to ensure you receive the best care possible. When taking the first steps in finding the right fertility clinic, make sure to complete the following:
Investigate Smart with SART
As you begin your search, log onto the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) website, and conduct some basic research on the success rates of fertility centers around your area. As stated by the federal government, fertility clinics are required to report their center’s IVF treatment cycle success rate. The website permits individuals to search for fertility centers by zip code, state, or region, with an additional feature that allows couples to enter basic information for success predictions related to assisted reproductive technology (ART). In parallel with nationally posted results, be wary of clinics that are not transparent about their success results online.
Identify Fertility Best Practices
When navigating fertility center websites, try to understand how the fertility clinic performs single embryo transfers (eSET) and double embryo transfers (2BET). Clinics that perform eSETs follow national best practices in the world of fertility, utilizing the most up-to-date technology and treatment. While an eSET procedure selects one embryo to be placed in the uterus from a larger subset of embryos, a 2BET procedure places multiple embryos in the uterus, increasing risks associated with ART. Along with this, performance of eSETs prevents the risk of preterm and high order multiple births. Among experts and nationally known reproductive organizations, there is consensus that ART resulting in a single birth is preferred.
Recognize Your Own Feelings, Too!
Once you investigate and identify specific fertility clinics, set up a short consultation with one of their fertility specialists or physicians. This is key to gain insight on how they operate as a facility – on an organizational, as well as personal – level. Set aside some time to evaluate the consultation appointment with your significant other, and talk about the following:
- How did the staff greet and talk with us?
- Was the conversation professional? Personable?
- Did the staff advocate for me and my fertility treatment?
- Did the staff feel confident in ART for my specific case?
- Did they provide a sense of urgency, as well as a personalized treatment plan?
- Was our fertility case important in the eyes of the specialist or physician? Did they identify other potential treatments other than IVF?
As you and your family begin doing initial fertility research and scheduling consultation appointments, know you are not alone in this process. If at any point you need assistance, please feel free to contact Dr. Abuzeid or one of our fertility specialists at our clinic. We are here to make you feel comfortable and secure in your fertility clinic and treatment decision.
