INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)
ICSI is one of many assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures.
ICSI for Male Factor Infertility:
For infertile couples who have decided to proceed with IVF due to male infertility, an infertility specialist will choose ICSI, a procedure where a single sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of an egg using a specialty microscope and a pipette (fine needle). ICSI procedure for male factor infertility is used in cases of oligospermia (very low sperm count), astenozoospermia (poor sperm motility), teratozoospermia (too many abnormal sperm), antisperm antibodies, a sperm's inability to bind to and penetrate the egg, azoospermia (no sperm count), a blockage and obstruction, and repeated fertilization failure. In male patients who have no sperm in their semen additional procedures such as Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) or Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) needs to be performed in order to retrieve sperm so that it is available for the ICSI procedure.
