IN-VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF)

IVF is one of many assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures.

Its beginning:
Born in England in 1978, Louise Brown was the first human being conceived through a procedure we have come to call “in vitro fertilization” (in vitro is Latin for “in glass” + fertilization, literally meaning “in glass fertilization”).   At the time, however, a skeptical public thought of it as a strange, seemingly alien, answer to a variety of infertility problems, resulting in what were then commonly referred to as “test tube babies.”

A foremost expert in the field:
A pioneer in the area of in vitro fertilization, Dr. Abuzeid studied in England in the late 1980s, taught by leading experts in the burgeoning field.  In 1989, Dr. Abuzeid brought his expertise to the United States, opening and establishing the first such practice in Flint, Michigan at Hurley Medical Center.  Today, Dr. Abuzeid is considered a foremost expert in the area of infertility, having authored well over 200 publications, abstracts, book chapters, and reviews.  Dr. Abuzeid also uses his prowess as a professor, works as a respected clinician, and continues to research at his facility to remain on the cutting edge in the field of reproductive medicine.

The process of in vitro fertilization at our clinic:
Having worked as a doctor in the infertility field for over thirty years, Dr. Abuzeid knows firsthand the frustration, heartache, and emotional ups and downs couples experience when the odds of conceiving a child are stacked against them.

Dr. Abuzeid approaches each case with compassion, understanding, and solid experience.  If, after discussing all possible treatment options, you and the doctor decide IVF is the choice for you, rest assured you will be in good hands throughout the process.  In addition to his study and extensive practical experience in IVF during its infancy (pardon the pun) and beyond, Dr. Abuzeid remains a trusted leader in the specialty by continually participating in research, attending seminars, lecturing at medical schools, contributing to medical journals, and taking courses on current methodology and best practices.  What's more, Dr. Abuzeid's facility includes a state-of-the-art laboratory, giving patients the peace of mind that comes from knowing that everything associated with the process happens in-house.

The IVF process at our clinic happens after preliminary testing and takes place over a period of approximately three weeks.  Dr. Abuzeid will begin the process by prescribing fertility medications unique to the patient's specific needs.  This part of the process is referred to as ovulation induction.  During ovulation induction, medications will assist the ovaries in producing multiple, often large numbers of, follicles.  Each of these follicles houses one egg, or ovum, which will be retrieved once it has reached maturity.  Throughout the process of ovulation induction, a patient will have to follow closely her medication schedule, have frequent blood draws to monitor various hormonal levels, and come into the office for several vaginal ultrasounds to check follicular growth.  Doing so, the doctor will be able to see whether or not the follicles (and eggs) are developing at the appropriate rate by measuring them and increasing or decreasing fertility medications accordingly.  When it is determined the eggs are ripe, a thin needle will be inserted trans-vaginally into the ovarian follicles to withdraw the eggs.  This process is commonly referred to as egg retrieval and it is done under sedation.  It should be noted that under normal circumstances (without any infertility issues), a woman produces only one follicle, once per month, from one side of her ovaries.  In the IVF process, several follicles are produced.  These follicles (eggs) will be mixed with the father's sperm in a glass petri dish, where the sperm will fertilize the eggs (now called embryos).  The embryologist will incubate and monitor the fertilized eggs for proper development.  At this point, Dr. Abuzeid and the embryologist determine the health of the embryos and count the number of those considered good quality.  This information is then shared with the couple, who decide, considering the doctor's recommendation, how many embryos will be placed into the uterus (embryo transfer, or ET) and when the procedure will occur.  Should there be extra embryos, the couple may decide to have them frozen in our laboratory for future frozen embryo transfers (FET).  Two days after the egg retrieval the patient is placed on vaginal progesterone to help support the pregnancy if it occurs.  Two weeks after ET, the woman will come back to the clinic for a pregnancy test (blood pregnancy test).  If positive, a pregnancy ultrasound scan will be performed.
